I know some people have a hard time understanding what skype is. It basically is a phone line like a cell or a home line that lives on the internet. Meaning that if I have internet access then my phone is connected. When I don’t have an internet connection its like having a cell phone turned off. I still get voice mail ect.
The upside to using skype is Its only like $30 a year with free incoming calls and 2 cents a minute for outgoing. In the last year I think I’ve spent a total of maybe $20 on outgoing calls. At 2 cents a minute thats only $1.20 an hour. They also give you the option of choosing your number. I choose a St Louis Number since most people callign me are in St Louis. This means no matter where I am in the world someone can call me for free from St Louis. you can add other numbers to your account in different cites cheaply as well in case you have a small group of people in another location that call.
The downside The quality is not as good as a line line and almost as good as a cell. The other issue is you do need internet. Something that in the USA is not as easy to get everywhere. Its getting much better with time.
In places like England they sell a lot of the skype cell phone models. These are phones that look and feel like cell phones, but use skype instead of a cell phone provider. This works great in areas where wifi is everywhere. Now considering if your getting wifi then your getting access to the web. This eliminates the need for a data plan on a cell phone.
Enter the iphone. An iphone with skype is basically the cheapest way to have full function for the cheapest possible price. Provided you have wifi access. So am I getting an iphone? No. I opted for the $20 VOIP/skype handset. I’ll update this post with pictures when it arives at the door.
UPDATE:
Well there is no mac drivers for the phone. So none of the buttons work. I can still operate skype with my mouse and then use the handset to talk into. Its not that much of a hassle really.
